The Halcyon Saxophone
Quartet, under the direction of
Karen Wylie, won first place
in the Winds Division at the
Plowman Chamber Music
Competition in Columbia,
Missouri, on March 29, 2008.
They competed against
groups representing Eastman, Juilliard, Oberlin,
Cincinnati, and against a saxophone quartet from Michigan
State to win in the final round. They have also been invited
to compete in two other major chamber music
competitions later this month, the Coleman (California)
and Fischoff (Indiana) Chamber Music Competitions.
The Halcyon Saxophone Quartet members include senior
performance major Steven Hicks from Houston, Texas;
DMA performance major Holly Carlton from Holyoke,
Massachusetts; junior music education major Jameka
Byrd from Missouri City, Texas; and sophomore music
