A MEASUREMENT OF CP VIOLATION IN B 0 MESON DECAYS AT BELLE

We present a preliminary measurement of the Standard Model CP violation parameter sin 2#1 at the
KEKB asymmetric e + e - collider using a data sample of 6.2 fb -1 recorded at the #(4S) resonance
with the Belle detector. One of the neutral B mesons was fully reconstructed through its decay to a
CP eigenstate; J/#KS , #(2S)KS , # c1 KS , J/#KL or J/## 0 . The flavor of another B was identified
mainly by the charge of high momentum lepton or K ± . The time interval between two B decays was
determined from the measurement of the distance between the decay vertices. A maximum likelihood
fitting method was used to extract sin 2#1 from the asymmetry in the time interval distribution. We
obtained a preliminary result of
sin 2#1 = 0.45 +0.43
-0.44 (stat) +0.07
-0.09 (syst).
