The year of 1958 was a year full of accomplishments for Dr. Peter
Smith. It was the year he graduated from Southampton with a PhD in
Physical Organic Chemistry, three years after obtaining his BSc (Hons)
Chemistry from Birmingham University. It was the year he got married
and, with his wife Muriel, bought their first home. It was also the year
that, Peter Smith, now as Dr. Peter Smith, obtained his first job at the
top-secret Atomic Weapons Research Establishment (AWRE) at
Aldermaston.
A few years later, in 1963, Peter left AWRE and moved on to hold
several important posts at the Chemical Defence Experimental
Establishment, Porton Down, and then in London at the Ministry of
Defence Headquarters, before leaving scientific work and continuing
as a general administrator at the Ministry of Technology, the Cabinet
Office, the Department of Trade and Industry and the Office of
Telecommunications, before retiring in 1991.
