Summary: are the target molecules that undergo the
additional poly(A) extension by TPAP in
round spermatids.
It has been demonstrated that the deficiency
of cytoplasmic polyadenylation elementbind-
ing protein (CPEB) results in the arrests of
oogenesis and spermatogenesis at the pachytene
stages (17). Although expression of two cyto-
plasmic polyadenylation elementcontaining
mRNAs coding for the synaptonemal complex
proteins SCP1 and SCP3 are unaffected by the
CPEB deficiency, the poly(A) tails are reduced
in length, and the protein products are missing in
CPEB-deficient mice. In this study, the expres-
sion levels and sizes of CPEB, SCP1, and SCP3
mRNAs in Tpap/
testes were similar to those
