Summary: The Role of Watermarking in
Securing PeertoPeer Systems

ABSTRACT
Peer-to-peer le-sharing systems have tremendously grown
in popularity in the last few years. The large number of
users freely exchanging content has gained the attention of
content creators and owners. There are a number of parties
ranging from individual musicians and producers to large
content providers that desire to utilize peer-to-peer distri-
bution, but require certain content protection services. In
this paper, we explore the role of watermarking in securing
peer-to-peer systems. Specically, we discuss how water-
marking technology can help provide usage control, theft
deterrence and tracing, and copyright protection in peer-to-
peer environments. We suggest that application and system
designers should strive to understand the benets and pos-
sible applications of watermarking technology and work to
