Professor Gwyn Gould School of Biological Sciences

Summary: Professor Gwyn Gould
School of Biological Sciences
- Professor of Cell Biology,
University of Glasgow
Addressing the big questions of science and life
Biology has always been a passion for Professor Gwyn Gould. By the
time he reached secondary school, he knew he wanted to make it his
career. "I had an inspirational biology teacher who made us think," he
says. "Biologists deal with the big subjects of science and life. We will
never know all the answers but exploring the questions is very
rewarding." As he studied for his O levels, he got hold of a relative's
university textbook on biochemistry: "I didn't understand it all but I
found biochemistry fascinating and decided to study the subject at a
higher level."
Now, the schoolboy from South Wales is a leading researcher into cell
membranes at the University of Glasgow where he has secured a major
grant from the Wellcome Trust to investigate how basic cell biology
can benefit research on the causes and treatments of cancers and
diabetes.
Gwyn chose the University of Southampton for his undergraduate
