Extended Abstract
The paper presents algorithms for the determination of translation­ and rotation invariant fea­
tures for gray­scale images. A complete algebraic description of the resulting feature spaces is given.
That is achieved through the construction of a finite basis for the space of polynomial invariants.
These basis features contain all relevant information since every other feature can be expressed in
this basis by appropriate algebraic functions. Furthermore these basis features are complete in the
sense that they describe a given gray­scale image uniquely up to rotations and translations. We pre­
sent algorithms for an efficient parallel computation. Experimental results from an implementation
on a multiprocessor machine are given.
