On January 20, 1977, Jimmy Carter was
sworn in as the 39th
president of the
United States. After the inauguration,
the presidential motorcade began the 1.2
mile trip from the U.S. Capitol to the
White House. Then, in the middle of
Pennsylvania Avenue, it suddenly stopped.
Onlookers seemed concerned. Had the
car broken down? Was everyone alright?
Then, in a surprise move, President Carter
and his wife Rosalynn stepped out of the
presidential limousine and started walking.
Their 9-year-old daughter Amy, as well
as their three sons and daughters-in-law,
joined them. In his memoirs, Carter described the moment they got out of the car:
