NITRIDE-MULLITE-ALUMINA BY REACTION SINTERING

Abstract--We describe a new methodfor processing Si3N4-mullite-AI203 nanocomposites
by reaction sbltering of the green compacts after partial oxidation treatment. Bimodal powder
compacts used in this process were prepared by a colloidal filtration method. Si3N4and Al203
powders were dispersed in aqueous suspensions at pH=lO with the aid of an electrosteric
stabilizer, polymethacrylic acid. A binary mixture ofA1203powder was used to attain high green
densities. Thisprocess results in thefollowing morphology: nanometer-sized Si~4 particles that
are distributed in the mullite phase which is embedded in an Al203 matrix.
