Working on a PhD is challenging enough ... but Vera Hazelwood managed
to complete two at the same time; one in Theoretical Physics from Kiev
State Shevchenko University, the other in Applied Optics at Southampton.
The Ukrainian always enjoyed studying Physics right from schooldays,
particularly the theoretical and mathematical aspects of the subject.
However, as time went by, she became more interested in applying her
knowledge of science and maths to practical problems. Vera now works
for the Smith Institute for Industrial Mathematics and System Engineering
supporting UK companies who need mathematical solutions to tackle
issues and develop their businesses.
"I first came to Southampton on a summer project when I was an
undergraduate in Kiev and spent six weeks studying optics and liquid
crystals, which was totally new to me," she explains. "While I was there, it
