Communications
The work carried out in this project contains extensive modelling of various
underwater communications scenarios with a Ray Tracing Model and the
design and implementation of the prototype system, which selects an
appropriate Forward Error Control coding method according to the quality of
the underwater channel it operates on. The MODEM is required to operate in
harsh acoustic environment and provide a link between underwater terminals
such as submarines, or submarines and surface vessels or submarines and
underwater autonomous vehicles. The system aims at providing the highest
data rate with the lowest Bit Error Ratio for a given Signal to Noise Ratio. For
the purposes of the present project a series of powerful convolution codes
have been considered while better results are expected by adopting a Turbo
CODEC. The prototype communications system will be tested in an air
channel to provide acoustic communications between two computers through
the use of the sound cards facility.
