Abstract. Originally, active contours were boundary-based methods. They were
driven towards the edges of an image from the minimization of a criterion with
only boundary-based terms. The main purpose of region-based active contours is
to introduce information on the regions to segment, in addition to the classical
boundary-based information, in order to make the active contour evolve.
We propose here a general Eulerian framework for region-based active contours
