The School of Medicine has two established research tracks for non-faculty employees.
Each track has a specific intent, and assignment to the track should be made with a clear
understanding of the implications for the employee and the department. This policy
defines the intent of each track and the criteria for switching from the research assistant
and associate track to the research scientist track.
The Research Assistant/Associate and Research Scientists Tracks
The research assistant/associate track is intended to be a short-term track to provide the
employee with additional experience and training. It is not appropriate for employees
seeking permanent or long-term employment. The employee should understand that
appointment to such a position is, in essence, a training position without an assumption of
on-going employment. While this track has the opportunity for promotion from research
assistant to research associate, it is not meant to provide a career path nor is it meant to
