Anthony Oglesby graduated in 1977 with a Master of Philosophy, his
research having explored the effects of geographic mobility upon
retention in the Royal Navy.
He already had a long and varied relationship with Southampton. "My son
also obtained his degree at the University, which I therefore came to
know well in several guises. I was a Fellow undergoing research and,
bizarrely, as a student in the Department of Sociology obtaining a CQSW
(Certificate of Qualification in Social Work). When I left the University, I
was honoured to be appointed a Visiting Fellow for a year or two. The
town represented good cricket, reasonable pubs and a football team I
supported".
Anthony had been sponsored by the Ministry of Defence, and so after
graduation went to work for the Royal Navy. He subsequently worked
with the British Army and the Royal Air Force over the course of his
