Annual Review & Financial Statements AnnualReview&FinancialStatements2008 AnnualReview&FinancialStatements2008

Summary: Annual Review & Financial Statements
AnnualReview&FinancialStatements2008 AnnualReview&FinancialStatements2008
I am pleased to report that, as we begin 2009, Southampton's
position as one of the UK's top research universities has been
confirmed by the excellent results achieved in the latest Research
Assessment Exercise.
The RAE results, announced by the Higher Education Funding
Council for England in December 2008, underline our reputation
for research excellence and I would like to thank all staff for their
contributions to our accomplishments and for the tremendous
effort that went into preparing our submission.
Until HEFCE announces its QR allocations in March, we can
only guess at how these results will translate into funding for the
future. We are in company with several other leading research
universities who have also performed strongly and are waiting to
see how the new system might affect their funding.
However, RAE 2008 clearly indicates that Southampton is one of
the UK's strongest universities for a wide range of subjects from
engineering and medicine, to humanities and social sciences.
