A Generic WebBased Network Management Application

Summary: A Generic WebBased Network Management
Application
Yehuda Afek \Lambda Yoram Cohen y
Computer Science Department,
TelAviv University, Israel 69978.
Abstract
A new generic, web based approach to network management is introduced.
In traditional network management each management application is designed
and implemented from scratch by its vendor in a specific proprietary way that
depends on the vendors private MIB and implementation. Here we suggest a
standard platform for the design of management applications. In the same way
that the Web and HTML are a standard platform for people to design remote
graphic displays and interfaces, our platform together with a new language
called NMML (Network Management Markup Language) suggests an easy way
to build and design complex and yet flexible management applications. The new
approach greatly simplifies the development of network management applica
tions, and paves the road for making a generic network management application
able of managing any communication device. This approach requires, at most,
the addition of few MIB variables in the device's agent.
