We use the flat space limit of the AdS/CFT correspondence to derive a simple relation between the
2 2 scattering amplitude of massless string states in type IIB superstring theory on tendimensional
Minkowski space and a scaling limit of the N = 4 super YangMills four point functions. We conjecture
that this relation holds nonperturbatively and at arbitrarily high energy. [February 11, 2010]
Introduction Originating as a phenomenological de
scription of hadron scattering, string theory is defined at
the basic level by a prescription for perturbative scatter
ing amplitudes. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence [1],
one can go beyond a perturbative formulation and define
string theory in asymptotically AdS backgrounds in terms
