The problem of the unilateral contact without friction for a punch, the face of which is characterized by a rapid change in the
neighbourhood of the a priori unknown boundary of the contact area, is investigated. Asymptotic formulae are obtained for the
function which describes the variation of the contact area and the contact-pressure density in the boundary-layer region. The
problem of the behaviour of the contact pressures in the neighbourhood of a smoothed stress concentrator is considered.
