VENICE, La. -- The Gulf of Mexico
oil spill is an environmental trage-
dy, and it appears we're not going to
have a good sense of the magnitude
of this event for some time to come.
We don't even know where it will
have impacts, but they will almost
certainly range from Texas to Flori-
da, and effects could be substantial
in any of those coastal states. The
oil spill is already having an effect
on plants and animals, potentially
including bass and the aquatic eco-
system that supports them.
Unfortunately, this oil spill is lo-
cated just offshore of what is likely
the most vulnerable estuarine
marshland in the United States. It
