Summary: Marjorie Hardy's long and dedicated service to the University and
immense impact on the departments in which she has served make
her an ideal recipient for this year's Betsy Faught Award.
Marjorie's service to the campus began over 30 years ago in the
UCSD Alumni Association. Shortly thereafter she was recruited to a
Program Rep position in the Department of Theatre, and she has
remained with Academic Affairs ever since. Marjorie worked her
way up through the staff ranks in the Warren College Provost
Office, the departments of Music and Physics, and the San Diego
Supercomputer Center (SDSC). During her tenure at SDSC, Marjorie
established the Center's business office as a part of UCSD. In 2001
Marjorie obtained her first business officer position when she
returned to the Music Department, joining a unit in need of her
strong management skills.
In 2006 Marjorie assumed her current position, as Chief Operating
Officer in the department of Chemistry & Biochemistry. She arrived
at the department at a time when it was suffering from significant
deficits and a crisis in staff morale. According to current Chair
Robert Continetti, "it was in this environment that Marjorie came
