Dr. George Tuckwell School of Ocean & Earth Sciences

Summary: Dr. George Tuckwell
School of Ocean & Earth Sciences
- Director, RSK STATS
Alumnus Profile
Dr George Tuckwell was one of the first young people to sample the
delights of studying at the newly built National Oceanography Centre
down on the waterfront. He had chosen the University for his first degree
in Geophysical Sciences and decided to stay on for a PhD; "I liked the idea
of working within sight of the sea but also because the Challenger
Division for Seafloor Processes and its respected academics were also
moving there."
Always interested in science at school, George decided to specialise in
Physics. "I didn't have a particular career in mind but knew there would
be plenty of opportunities in that area." After A-Levels in Maths, Physics
and Geology, he enrolled at Southampton and became fascinated by the
movements of the Earth's tectonic plates. For his PhD, he chose to
examine fault networks of the mid oceanic ridges: "I thoroughly enjoyed
my doctoral studies as it was a very interesting subject. Of course, there
were a few false starts and blind avenues but that tends to happen in
research; with a little support you soon get back on track."
