Abstract
In this paper we describe the design of a library of biorthogonal wavelet transforms and their
successful applications to still image compression. The wavelet transforms were constructed from
various types of interpolatory and quasi-interpolatory splines. The transforms use FIR and IIR
lters and are implemented in a fast lifting mode.

1 Introduction
By now wavelet transforms grew into becoming one of the basic tools for signal, image processing
and numerical computation. In particular, biorthogonal symmetric wavelets manifested remarkable
abilities in still image compression, especially the so called 9/7 wavelets [1], which were adopted by
JPEG 2000 image compression standard [20]. In this paper we present a new library of biorthogonal
wavelet transforms, which proved to be e∆cient for image compression. Transforms belonging to this
