Alumnus Profile
Dr. Sam Leary began her interest in statistics with a BSc in Probability and
Statistics at the University of Sheffield, followed by an MSc in Medical
Statistics at the University of Reading. After graduating in 1996 Sam took
a job at the University of Southampton's Medical Research Council
Environmental Epidemiology Unit as a statistician. "The majority of
students either went into academic or pharmaceutical work after the
medical statistics MSc; I choose the academic route as I felt the work
would be more challenging and rewarding."
Sam remembers "at the time of finishing my MSc I felt I wanted a break
from studying and wasn't even sure I was going to do a PhD." Two years
later, however, Sam began a part-time PhD while continuing to work full-
time as a statistician. Her PhD research was in epidemiology, studying
geographical variation in neonatal size and shape, and relationships with
maternal and paternal body composition. Her job involved research into
