As I take up my office as Vice-Chancellor, I feel
privileged to return to Southampton to lead the
university where I completed my postgraduate
education. The University of Southampton continues
to achieve great things. Just a few of the achievements
in the past year include: helping the British cycling
team to triumph at the Beijing Olympic Games;
leading a major excavation of the Roman port, Portus,
which once served as the maritime gateway to Rome;
and discovering new insights into how infections
affect people with Alzheimer's disease. I am delighted
to be working with such talented staff and students,
without whom the achievements described in this
review would not be possible.
TheUniversityhascertainlychangedagreatdealsincemyPhDgraduationin1989­insize,
inthescopeofeducationandresearch,andinstaffandstudentnumbers.Oureducational
programmes continue to attract the highest quality students from a wide variety of
backgrounds and countries. Regular student surveys indicate that students enjoy an
