Introduction
As the champion for excellence of scholarship and research across the University, the Vice President for
Research (VPR) will have a prominent leadership role. She/he will promote the collaborative research
priorities and themes produced by the Commission on the Future of the University, assist faculty in
developing new research programs, encourage investment in research infrastructure and promote
successful major grant and center proposals. As the chief research officer for the University, the VPR
promotes university-wide research enhancement and compliance activities. These include the formulation
and promotion of research activities and guidelines, promotion and coordination of interdisciplinary
research, and oversight of technology transfer activities. She/he works closely with the faculty, academic
deans, and senior leadership to promote collaborative research among the University's Schools as well as
translational research and technology transfer. The office is responsible for the management and staffing
of Institutional Review Boards and various safety committees that review over 2100 research protocols a
year. This position reports directly to the Executive Vice President and Provost and participates as a
member of the President's Cabinet.
