TEXTBOOK: 'Multivariable Mathematics' by Theodore Shiffrin, John Wiley & Sons
BRIEF DESCRIPTION: This course covers the usual topics of a Multivariable Calculus course such as
MTH234, but some additional topics are covered as well. The main difference is that the emphasis is on theory
and not on computational skills. Students are expected to understand theoretical concepts and mathematical
proofs. It is also assumed that they know how to write mathematical proofs, i.e. develop and coherently
formulate mathematical arguments.
If you feel that you have difficulties with the emphasis on theory or that you are not sufficiently prepared you
may want to consider switching to MTH234.
The Linear Algebra lecture MTH309 (section 5) in the Fall Semester of 2010 had the same emphasis. The text
used was 'Linear Algebra Done Wrong' by Sergei Treil, Brown University. It will serve this semester as a
reference for topics from Linear Algebra. It is available at www.math.brown.edu/~treil/papers/LADW/LADW.pdf
