Summary: Thomas Jefferson was appointed US minister (ambassador) to France in 1784, and for the next five years he experienced life in Paris with
its intellectual salons, its art, music, and culture, and its food and wine. In addition to performing his ambassadorial duties, he served as
a conduit for the best of things American to the French people, and the best of things French to his fellow Americans, being a kind of
cultural mediator. In 1787 he took a long, leisurely trip down the Rhone River, inspecting vineyards and wineries, admiring the architecture,
agricultural methods, Roman ruins, and the countryside, examining the habits of the people, looking for useful ideas and practices to share
with his countrymen at home, and making observations about French society and government. Our trip will begin with an introduction to
Jefferson's Paris, then explore the France he visited, with attention to how Jefferson traveled, his skills as a tourist, and his reactions to what
he encountered. Board the Avalon Scenery in Chalon-sur-Saône for a journey on the Saone and Rhone rivers south to Arles and Nice.
Joining us on this cruise will be John Boles who holds the William Pettus Hobby Chair in History at Rice University, where he has been on
the faculty since 1981. Educated at Rice and the University of Virginia, he is a distinguished historian and an award winning teacher and is an
experienced and popular study leader!
