Alumnus Profile
Dr Chris Lindsell grew up fascinated by boats and determined to join
the Royal Navy. Although poor eyesight limited his options in the
military, he signed up as an engineer and was sponsored through his
undergraduate degree at Southampton.
Towards the end of his degree, he had a change of heart about the
military lifestyle and a future in the submarine fleet, and stayed on at
university. "Basically, I asked my lecturer Professor Michael Griffin for a
job," he explains. "At first, he said no, but I asked him again and was
taken on as a research assistant in the Human Factors Research Unit at
the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research working on vibration-
induced white finger, a dreadful disease suffered by many miners."
Alongside his work in the labs, Chris embarked on a PhD in the same
subject and built on his knowledge of statistics, epidemiology and
