Storage of Bicycles on Railing
Over the course of several months, there has been an increase in the number of bicycles
being improperly affixed to railings and handrails on campus. Unfortunately, the
residential areas on campus have the most violations.
The requirement of keeping handrails clear comes from the National Fire Protection
Association's Life Safety Code stating, Means of egress shall be continuously maintained
free of all obstructions or impediments to full instant use in the case of fire or other
emergency( National Fire Protection Association 101, Life Safety Code, 2009 Edition.
Chapter 7, Means of Egress. 220.127.116.11* General. ). The Department of Public Safety Fire
Marshal policy also reflects this mandate stating, Handrails and guardrails shall be kept
free and clear and shall not be used to secure bicycles or any other object which might
interfere with or hinder normal pedestrian traffic flow.
