Summary: Strategic Planning at U of R
What external groups are you meeting with? Suggestions: SFL, Crowns, Co-ops and Credit Unions,
SAHO, Public & Catholic School Bds or the STF, Chamber of Commerce, small business, SARM,
SUMA.
We must try to think what the future of the prairies will look like in 10 yrs, 20+ yrs. There is a need to
investigate change (environmental, demographic, economic, etc) because Univ education and research
must be geared to this change. Students need an appropriate foundation to adapt to change.
Historically what niches were to be filled by the UofR? Fine Arts, Police Studies, Journalism, Liberal
Arts & Humanities, Public Administration (because this is a "Gov't Town")
Now:
Research look at the whole area of sustainable development
Environment - environmental protection, alternative energy sources (wind, solar, geo-thermal,
bio-mass), alternative products (algae for biodiesel, straw bale construction, recycling-using old
products in new ways). How do we develop these products for consumer use?
New economic and financial models (This year we've seen "what doesn't work"!)
Define (redefine?) "research" in fine arts; creative effort needs recognition
Use undergrads to assist with research--gives them an incentive to continue their studies,
provides experience; pay a stipend
Teaching
Student retention depends almost entirely on the first-year experience:
