As a child growing up in Jamaica, Favian Dixon always wanted to be a
pilot. Now he has achieved his dream of working in the aviation industry,
although not in the air. A Research Fellow in his country's Civil Aviation
Authority since 2004, he is engaged in regulatory work and planning,
frequently liaising with Government ministers and other officials. He has
also contributed to Vision 2030, a major strategy document aimed at
increasing prosperity in Jamaica over the next twenty years.
The key to his high-flying job was his PhD in Engineering Sciences at the
University of Southampton where he studied the behaviour of gases at
high speeds and temperatures. Favian won scholarships to take his first
degree in Mathematics and General Physics and later on to undertake
postgraduate work in the area of Astrophysics, both at the University of
the West Indies in Kingston, then decided to travel further afield: "I always
wanted to go to university overseas, either in America or Europe. I chose
