Summary: On the beach of the Persian Gulf with Sharja behind us
Arianne on the plane to Jeddah;
Praise Allah for our safe journey.
A year of unexpected travels and accomplishments. Kicked
off the new year on the other side of the world in Dubai and Saudi
Arabia, where Alice was invited to visit King Abudllah's new
KAUST University and Dar Al-Hekma women's college. Arianne
& Alice donned black abayas as we peered cautiously and curiously
into the obscure, blurry-faced world of Araby, where human pictures
are rarely to be seen and the deserts are littered with plastic bags.
Other trips this year took us to Barcelona and Languedoc; lovely
Cortes Island in British Columbia, and Seattle.
Back in California, Dale hopped aboard an unpected change
of tide in public opinion by getting Assemblyman Tom Ammiano
to introduce the first-ever marijuana legalization bill in California,
from a draft which had been gathering dust in NORML's files. The
State Board of Equalization picked up on Dale's economic analysis
and concurred that the state could reap more than a billion dollars
a year by taxing and regulating cannabis. The upshot was an
unprecedented outpouring of media attention and public interest
