Robin Thomas now works in international shipping, a world away from
his doctoral subject at university the archaeology of faunal remains. Yet
he believes that studying a PhD at Southampton gave him the vital tools
to succeed in business. "I still have to analyse data and make judgements
on complex information and I learned how to do that while studying for
my doctorate," he explained.
A love of archaeology was sparked in his childhood. "Family holidays
usually involved a visit to some historic sites around the country, I was
lucky enough to take part in some digs when I was in my teens; it all
made me determined to study Archaeology."
In 1982, undergraduate courses in the subject were in short supply.
Robin investigated several alternatives then decided on Southampton, a
short distance from the family home in Poole. "Archaeology at
Southampton was launched as an academic subject by Barry Cunliffe,
