Summary
3D imaging methods are widely used in medicine and biology, mainly for image-guided di-
agnosis, therapy, and visual morphological analyses. Going one step further, methods are
needed that allow physicians to further improve their diagnosis and to plan therapy or sur-
gery by quantitative analysis and simulation. This requires new tools for image segmentation
and reconstruction of 3D geometrical models which faithfully represent the individual ana-
tomies. Such 3D anatomical models provide the basis for a wealth of new quantitative
methods. In the long term they will help to turn many fields in medicine into a more quanti-
tative science.
We demonstrate the already present impact of geometric patient models in medicine by ex-
amples from various fields in medical treatment and surgery planning. All work displayed is
based on the 3D geometry reconstruction and visualization software amira®
.
