MANUFACTURING NITRIC ACID IN AN ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY WAY

Summary: MANUFACTURING NITRIC ACID
IN AN ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY WAY:
AN EXAMPLE FOR MATH 2574H, SPRING 2012,
UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA
ADAPTED FROM:
INTRODUCTION TO CHEMICAL PROCESSES BY REGINA M. MURPHY
We want to make nitric acid (HNO3) from cheap ingredients without making
nasty byproducts. We will build the process from six reactions:
O2 + 2CH4 2CO + 4H2(1)
CO + H2O CO2 + H2(2)
N2 + 3H2 2NH3(3)
4NH3 + 5O2 4NO + 6H2O(4)
2NO + O2 2NO2(5)
3NO2 + H2O 2HNO3 + NO(6)
To use matrix methods we organize the information above into a matrix:
