T
he University of Illinois consistently ranks among the
top ten in the nation in key areas of internationaliza-
tion, according to the Institute for International Edu-
cation's Open Doors report. In fact, Illinois has annually been
among the top five in the number of international students
on campus, proving that the University has become a prime
destination for research and scholarship in the world. As a
result, Illinois was awarded the 2008 Senator Paul Simon
Award for Campus Internationalization. In addition, former
Chancellor Richard Herman was given the 2009 Michael P.
Malone International Leadership Award by the Association
of Public Land Grant Universities.
In 2009, the Institute for Higher Education at Shanghai Jia
Tong University ranked Illinois as the 25th best university in
the world and the 19th best university in America.
