ABSTRACT
A Markov chain model for evaluating the perfor
mance of a multistage ATM switching fabric using
split shared buffered switch elements (SE) is pro
posed. By comparing the results obtained from the
proposed model and simulations, it is shown that
the model is accurate in the presence of uniform
and nonuniform traffic in the switch. To elimi
nate the influence of head of line blocking, a non
FIFO queueing discipline approach called a window
bypass mechanism is considered. By comparing
the results obtained from the proposed model and
previous models, the performance of ATM switches
