I. INTRODUCTION (Purpose and Intent)
As a public institution, the University of South Florida System (USF System) has responsibility
for ensuring that all its activities, including those related to research, are carried out responsibly,
with the highest degree of integrity. It is important that no individual or private entity
improperly benefits from or is unjustly enriched through their participation in research taking
place within the USF System. USF System research must remain a rigorous and open inquiry,
unencumbered by potential Conflicts of Interest* that might undermine the integrity of
research results or affect the sound judgment of employees, students, or subcontractors.
USF System employees participating in research may have financial interests, proprietary
interests, or engage in activities of an entrepreneurial nature that could pose an actual or
potential conflict with research in which they are participating. Such financial interests are not
prohibited, nor are they inherently unethical. However, such interests must be disclosed by the
Investigator* and reviewed by the appropriate USF System official, and any conflicts must be
managed or eliminated before the research may proceed. The USF System expects anyone
