Strategic Opportunity Assessment Initiative Introduction

Summary: Strategic Opportunity Assessment Initiative
March 2009
Introduction
The University's risk management framework is designed to identify and respond to the
risks and opportunities that impact our ability to fulfill our strategic plan. In the past, the
discussion at the University has focused primarily on the risks facing the institution.
However, since an opportunity missed potentially becomes a risk to the University, it is
important that we periodically identify the strategic opportunities available to the
University and take steps to capture the benefits of our key strategic opportunities.
The timing of this initiative was designed to coincide with the University's strategic
planning process. The information gathered through the opportunity identification
discussions will be provided to the planning team as an input into the University's
strategic planning process.
In order to gather information on the key strategic opportunities facing the University,
interviews were conducted with members of the University Leadership Team (ULT). A
total of 31 interviews were conducted. Team members were asked to focus their input on
opportunities that have the potential to have a substantial impact on the University.
While discussions did stray into opportunities that are directly linked to a specific faculty
or department, the primary focus of this initiative was to gather those opportunities that
are strategic and enterprise-wide in nature.
