Dr Bill Hedges works in temperatures of minus 20 celsius. In the winter
the sun rises at 10.30am and sets in the early afternoon. Yet he hugely
enjoys his job working for BP, making sure pipelines and other oil
exploration equipment in Alaska are free from potentially-polluting
corrosion. "Before moving to Anchorage, I worked in the Caribbean," he
explains. "Very different jobs but both very rewarding."
Bill was always interested in science, Growing up in the 1970s, the space
programme fascinated him, but he soon developed a love for chemistry
"Little did I know, when I was experimenting with the chemistry set my
parents gave me that the subject would lead to a career that has taken
me around the world," he says.
He headed to Southampton for his first degree in Chemistry, enjoyed
organic chemistry but found he was better at physical chemistry. "The
1980s were a good time to study science; there were so many new
