Summary: RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FOR TEACHERS
June 2011 ­March 2013
The Materials Research Laboratory (MRL) at the University of California, Santa Barbara,
will sponsor a two-year program in laboratory research* and classroom inquiry starting in
June 2011. *No prior scientific research experience is necessary.
All secondary science teachers from the tri-county area are eligible to apply for this
program, which is designed to engage junior high and high school science teachers.
Program Timeline
Teachers will be required to attend two summer sessions and one meeting per quarter
during two academic school years, concluding with a Tri-County Spring Workshop for
Science Teachers usually held in mid-March.
First Year
Summer 2011 ­ June 20 to July 29 Stipend - $4,500
Teachers will spend six weeks on campus at UCSB working in a lab research
group.

Fall 2011 ­ Spring 2012 - Academic year meetings - Stipend - $1,000
Throughout the first academic year, the group of teachers will meet once a
quarter with project coordinators, scientists and education specialists to explore
