Dear Friends,
It has been a banner year. With your help--and the amazing labors of the RBS staff and
its world-class faculty--some 300 students attended Rare Book School in 2010. Our
summer courses, including six new offerings ranging from early-modern palaeography to
born-digital materials, operated at 96% capacity; many had long wait-lists. RBS was
"noticed" in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times Book Review, the Times
(London), the Financial Times, the Sunday Telegraph, the Times Literary Supplement,
the Chronicle of Higher Education, in more than 20 online venues, and in several radio
broadcasts. Our faculty garnered major awards, chief among them Timothy Barrett's
MacArthur Fellowship and Jan Storm van Leeuwen's ILAB Breslauer Prize for
Bibliography.
One of this summer's students, formerly president of a college and of a national non-
profit, opined that RBS was "the best-run non-profit I have ever encountered." She
explained, "RBS exceeded my every expectation. Every function--from applications, to
orientation, to classes, to keeping up with individual requests throughout--was
professionally handled as smoothly and invisibly as the interlocking parts in a Swiss
watch. This exceptional effort achieved the perfect environment in which students and
