A labour of love in the library
Rabbi Dr Chanan Tomlin enjoyed working on his PhD so much that he
was disappointed when it was all over. Studying Orthodox Jewish
responses in Britain to the Holocaust using the Schonfeld papers in the
Parkes Library for Jewish/non-Jewish Relations, was a labour of love: "For
me, it was an escape from everyday pressures. After I had written up my
research, I felt a real sense of anti-climax," he admits.
Members of the Jewish community in London funded Chanan to carry out
four years of doctoral research at the University of Southampton, which
he combined with his job as the head teacher of a London primary
school.
"It was a challenge to do everything," he admits, "especially as I have a
large family and they kept me busy too. I used to go down to
Southampton every couple of weeks and photocopied documents in the
