Abstract. Smart home technology offers a viable solution to the increasing needs of
the elderly, special needs and home based-healthcare populations. The research to date
has largely focused on the development of communication technologies and intelligent
user interfaces. The trend should now focus on the computational analysis to provide
a means of user-profiled support to promote intelligent independent living.
We present an overview of a system that provides intelligent data analysis for
smart homes. A key element of this system is the capability to handle time-related
concepts. Our proposal exploits the mutual benefits of Active Databases and Tempo-
ral Reasoning to accommodate prevention of hazardous situations via processing of
complex event detection. To maximize the reliability of the system behaviour we use
tools to verify the set of ECA rules. We believe that this mix of technologies offers an
innovative solution to both the research and the application domains.
