Summary: Dr. Terry Fish

Dr Terry Fish graduated with a PhD in Education in 1994, studying how
children learn, and the link with effective and affective domain. Initially,
this was not the career that Terry had had in mind. Studying his
undergraduate degree in Electronic Engineering at Southampton, he had
been sponsored by the Royal Navy. Leaving to enter a career in teaching,
Terry remembers: "It was not easy to find a first teaching job but Maths
and Science was in demand".
It was working in education when Terry first considered postgraduate
research: "It was suggested to me by a Local Authority advisor and I was
so pleased that I took his advice." Indeed, his experience was a positive
one. He recalls how it "went well and my supervisor was really helpful."
Terry was employed during his PhD, and his Local Authority helped fund
it. This proved a mutually beneficial relationship: "I was promoted from
Head of Science to Deputy Head half way through the research."
