A Contribution to Nonlinear System Theory

ABSTRACT --- This paper suggests a char
acterization of systems through equivalence
classes of the input signals. Two input signals
are called equivalent if they are mapped by the
system to the same output. The correspond
ing equivalence classes for linear systems can
be described by subspaces of the signal space.
For the nonlinear case the description in terms
of subspaces is no longer valid. We show how to
construct nonlinear systems whose equivalence
classes are generated by the action of a group
on the signal space. This construction has in
teresting connections with the general Volterra
theory of nonlinear systems. We discuss for a
