Careers in Intellectual Property Tuesday 14 June 2011 at 1pm

Summary: Careers in Intellectual Property
Tuesday 14 June 2011 at 1pm
Life Sciences Building (Building 85, Room 2207)
Highfield Campus, University of Southampton
Speaker: Dr Robert Dempster, D Young & Co LLP
Are you looking for a career that uses your scientific expertise, but can't see yourself
staying in the lab? A career in intellectual property provides a unique opportunity to
combine your scientific knowledge with legal, business and linguistic skills. Your
background in science is the foundation of this career path, and you would continue to
work closely with scientists in both academia and industry. If you're passionate about
science, but not sure about an academic career, this presentation may be of interest.
This short talk will give those thinking of a career in intellectual property an overview
of possible career paths, as well as focussing more specifically on the role of a patent
attorney. All students and research staff are welcome to attend, but the presentation is
likely to be of most interest to postgraduate students and postdoctoral staff in biological
sciences. There will be an opportunity to ask questions at the end, or to follow up with
a more detailed discussion with the speaker.
