The Copyright Act allows you to copy sections of copyrighted books, articles and other material without
the consent of the copyright owner as long as you copying fairly for research, private study, criticism,
review or news reporting. This is called Fair Dealing.
Use the following guidelines when copying for the purpose of research or private study.
a) An entire chapter from a textbook
provided that it does not exceed 10
percent of the textbook.
b) An entire short story, play, poem or
essay from a textbook provided that
it does not exceed 10 percent of the
textbook.
c) An entire reproduction of an artistic
work or a single musical score from a
textbook provided that it does not
exceed 10 percent of the textbook.
