Expert Systems notes by: Eyal Amir

Summary: Expert Systems
notes by: Eyal Amir
April 4, 1997
Abstract
An Expert System is... This summary tries to define what is an Ex
pert System. Some different views and different systems are used in the
reference to different expert systems, so that in general almost every sys
tem can be defined as a type of an expert system (e.g., CYC is an expert
system for commonsense), and like many other subjects in AI, there is
nomuch difference and clear cut border.
The articles considered are mostly from the AI Qual list, and from
some other papers that are (now) in the Quail file.

1 Introduction
1.1 Definitions
Knowledge is power The main slogan of expert systems, coined by Feigen
baum (?). It comes to say that Knowledge is more important than the
reasoning mechanism. This slogan symbolizes most of what Expert Sys
tems stand for, i.e., reliance on large knowledge bases, and only a weak
inference.
