systems:

· During development, a cell's fate depends
on extrinsic factors (short and long range
signals to which it is exposed in situ) and
the profile of genes it expresses because
of its developmental history (intrinsic
factors).
· Patterning of the early embryo depends
on cell-cell interactions and signaling
molecules provided by other cells.
